Tips for Creating and Managing Strong Passwords

Passwords can seem like a simple tool to protect your personal information, but they become more complex as the number of devices and applications we use increases. For passwords to be effective at protecting our accounts from compromise, it is important to implement the following tips on password security and managers.

Basic Password Security Guidelines

  1. Use Long Passwords: Aim for at least 12 characters. Longer passwords are generally more secure.
  2. Create Unique Passwords: Avoid reusing passwords across different accounts. Each password should be unique to prevent multiple accounts from being compromised if one password is leaked.
  3. Avoid Common Words and Patterns: Do not use easily guessable information like “password123” or “qwerty.” Instead, use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.
  4. Use Passphrases: Consider using a series of random words or a sentence that is easy to remember but hard to guess.
  5. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Whenever possible, add an extra layer of security by enabling 2FA on your accounts. This is especially important for any web portal that has access to your finances.
  6. Avoid Password Hints: Do not use password hints or security questions that can be easily guessed or found out through social engineering.
  7. Regularly Update Passwords: Change your passwords periodically, especially if you suspect they might have been compromised.

Recommendation on the Use of Password Managers

Password managers are useful for enhancing password security. Password managers can:

  • Generate Strong Passwords: They create complex, unique passwords for each of your accounts.
  • Store Passwords Securely: Password managers encrypt your passwords, keeping them safe from unauthorized access.
  • Simplify Login Processes: They can automatically fill in login details, making it easier and faster to access your accounts.
  • Alert You to Breaches: Many password managers can notify you if your stored passwords have been compromised in a data breach.
